How about letting Hilary emerge as frontrunner for the Democrats? I think that's a mistake since I don't think she can win -- she's far too polarizing and would rally the right. Since victory in national elections is greatly influenced by who gets out the vote better, a run by Hilary would almost ensure a Republican victory.
Also, direct opposition to Bush is Chavez's hallmark. The only difference between that comment and others he's made was its forum and greater media coverage. Also, there's no way Venezuela would have gotten the rotating UN security council seat anyway. Why is it a blunder if it rallies his support at home among the Venezuelan poor?
