THE STORY: Imagine a world where we don't exist. Because of an onset of unexplained infertility in women, teenagers and children are extinct. With the disappearance of youth, the expectation for human survival vanishes, sending the world into a state of chaos.

That's the world of "Children of Men," which takes place in the United Kingdom in 2027. The efforts of Theo Faron (Clive Owen) to lead a "normal" life are interrupted by his ex-wife, Julian Taylor (Julianne Moore), the leader of an activist group. She's discovered an African woman named Kee (Claire-Hope Ashitey) who has miraculously become pregnant. She needs Faron's help to get Kee into the country.

WORK OF ART: The fusion of a stellar cast and an exceptional script gives the characters distinct personalities that the viewer can relate to. The movie presents both a convincing plot and a meaningful message about the essential role children play in our society. Visually stunning sequences and unexpected plot twists give the movie energy and keep the audience captivated throughout the depressing story.

A WARNING: This movie is bleak. It has characters who die (and it's no secret -- many do). It has graphic and depressing sequences.

It's emotionally draining and not for those who prefer watching more pleasant plots -- but it's a great movie that's worth watching.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The Golden Globes and the Oscars overlooked this movie as a best picture nominee -- a mistake, because this is one of the best movies of 2006. Still, you should approach this movie like a 5-year-old should approach "Bambi." Brace yourself for sadness or else endure severe misery while in the theater.

Ha...

It was cheery to me. Happy ending and all.

Facist Britain was better done in this movie than 1984 or V For Vendetta. What's with peoples' fascination with facism? xD
